A new 24-month STEM OPT extension went into effect on May 10, 2016. However, new STEM OPT regulations could affect your current and future employees whether you hire through contract agencies or direct. 

New regulations require employees to fill the Form I-983 upon request of the STEM extension. This will require the employer to set up a Plan that serves as practical training to the student’s degree. Because staffing agencies do not structure day-to-day activities at the client, they are not able to put in place the necessary training programs. These increased obligations do not apply to the original 12 month OPT.
